Hoor jy hoe huil daardie kindjie?
Hoor jy hoe sug sy ou moedertjie?
Die hongerpyne raak te veel
Dan gaan sy ogies toe
Op die vlakte in ‘n laptent
Treur ‘n moeder oor haar kind
Dit is nie haar eerste
Ook is dit nie haar laaste
Van Boervrou tot vlugteling
Wie sal vir ons verligting bring
Ons gebede word beantwoord
Al is dit ook deur ons dood
Nog ‘n graffie word gegrawe
sewe hopies op die vlakte
In ‘n laptent sit ‘n moeder
Gevoelloos staar sy oor die vlakte
Soos ‘n leeuwyf oor haar kind
Roep sy saggies in die wind
In haar oog is daar ‘n traan
In die nag skyn daar ‘n ster
